Do you want the truth or something beautiful?

Just been to see Glorious 39.
It was sensational!
Thrilling and gripping with exquisite cinematography and stunning costumes (by Annie Symons) to boot
I'm not sure about the plot but it was so enjoyable!
I was also thrilled to see my goldfish dressing gown make an appearance. It was so bizare to see it up there on the screen in a brief (but brilliant :)) scene
I made a little squeal and told the cinema 'THAT'S MY DRESSING GOWN!'
I bought it from a wonderful antiques shop in Salisbury when I went with Darling Daniela and Natalie last February
We saw the film in a lovely thirties cinema nearby, which often shows films not featured in larger cinemas.

500 Days of Summer

Another film I mean to see at the cinema yet probably never will, along with The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Duchess, Atonement, Brideshead Revisited, Fairytale:A True Story and Coco Before Chanel.

Let's Cause a Scene like Lovers do on Silver Screens

I have a few books found at markets and carboots of old movie stars from the 30s, 40s and 50s. My first was 'Inside Filmland' with the gorgeous Liz Taylor on the front, but my favourite picture is of stunning Ava Gardner. I then bought the 1932 Picture Show Annual, with many mentions of 'the new talkies' and smouldering femme fatales such as Greta and Marlene, adorned with risque tasseled dresses, ostrich feathers and sumptuous medieval style velvet gowns. And an odd and incredibly dull article about stars notepaper headings. The final two books are old account books with cuttings lovingly stuck onto the pages, rusty amber staples holding the precious pages together. The owner seemed to have an obsession with David Niven I then discovered the unstuck clipping tucked into the back pages, of a screen kiss, hidden like a private secret or wish. This book is my favourite. the time and effort. A personal project for their own satisfaction and enjoyment. That it has been held onto for all these years.

Films!

I've watched lots of films this week which has been inspiring! Film 4 has had loads of Channel 4 productions on, the majority of which I meant to see in the cinema but never did. I started with Hallam Foe which was strange, slightly creepy, endearing and beautiful! It's certainly worth a watch It's a darker fairytale style story, making me wish I could run from this mundane small town, and live in a clock tower. But minus the voyeurism. brick Lane was on Tuesday which I recorded. The flash backs to India were beautiful, however the story was quite tragic and I'm desperate to know what happened at the end. Yesterday I watched Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten. It was a fascinating insight into his life and incredibly inspiring. Next week I'm hopefully watching The Duchess and Brideshead Revisited at an old cinema that's always way behind the other bigger chains.
